League Two Lesmahagow into league cup semi-finals with big gun trio

Robert Irving’s troops won 3-0 in a penalty shootout at East Kilbride Thistle following a 1-1 draw there in Monday night’s quarter-final.

Trailing 1-0 at half-time, ’Gow got penalties thanks to Ryan Innes’s goal from a John McStay pass.

East Kilbride hit the woodwork with two of their three spot kicks – ’Gow keeper Alan Colquhoun saved the other – so goals by Kyle Weir, McStay and Matty Clarke put the Craighead Park team through.

The ’Gow manager told the Carluke and Lanark Gazette: “This is a great achievement.

"The other three teams left in are all Premiership sides, so it's great to have the 'Gow in there as well."

With junior giants Auchinleck Talbot, Kilwinning Rangers and Petershill also still in the tournament, Lesmahagow were guaranteed a tough semi-final draw whoever they got.

Although they have landed Petershill at Craighead Park next Wednesday night, 'Gow will be quietly confident as 'Hill look the weakest of the three big guns as they currently sit bottom of their league table without a point after four games.

“If we play to our potential we will give them a game,” Robert said.

“Four of my players – Innes, Clarke, McStay and Scott Falconer – were playing in Super Division 1 last season.

“That was the same league as Petershill at the time as they’ve just been promoted.”
