Lenzie YC football festival kicks off

Lenzie will play host to a feast of football over the next two weekends when the annual Football Festival organised by Lenzie Youth Club takes place.

Action will take place at the Loretto playing fields in Bishopbriggs and the astro pitch at Lenzie this Saturday and Sunday, June 11 and 12, and next Saturday and Sunday.

Matches will be played at all age groups from 2001s to 2009s.

Loretto will host 11-a-side games with the 2002s playing on Saturday from 9.45am to 1.15pm and the 2001s from 1.30pm to 5pm.

Matches for the 2004s will take place on Sunday from 1pm to 4.30pm with the 2003s in action next Sunday, June 19, from noon to 3.30pm.

Teams taking part include Westerton, EDFC and all the Lenzie teams.

Lenzie Academy will host the Soccer Sevens and Fun Fours matches with the 2007s playing on Saturday from 9am to noon and the 2005s from 1pm to 4pm.

On Sunday it will be the turn of the 2009s to take the field, from 10am to noon, while next Saturday, June 18, the 2008s will play from 10am to noon and the 2006s from noon to 3pm.

Teams taking part include Rossvale, West Park, Milngavie, Garnkirk and all the Lenzie teams. The first part of the festival - the primary schools competition - took place at Lenzie Academy last week.

A total of 11 schools took part in the event, played in sunny conditions at Lenzie Academy’s synthetic sports surface.

The competition was a great success with loads of good football as the teams started off in sections, then from the results three tiers were set up.

The first section was so close with St Agatha’s edging it on goal difference as St Flannans and Millersneuk pushed them all the way.

In the second tier Lenzie Primary finished top, but again it was tight with St Machan’s and Holy Family on their tails and a special mention goes to the very young Lenzie Moss team who played some great passing football.

The third tier was even tighter with Harestanes and Holy Family (2) sharing first spot and Meadowburn just missing out.

The festival continues over the next two weekends with matches for 2001s to 2009s being played at Lenzie Astro and at the Loretto playing fields in Bishopbriggs.
