Motherwell FC fan Allan Campbell living dream as first team regular for Steelmen

Glasgow-born Campbell (19) has been a key man in Motherwell’s fine campaign which continues with an enticing home Scottish Premiership encounter against Rangers this Saturday.

And just two weeks later comes a William Hill Scottish Cup semi-final against Aberdeen at Hampden, as ’Well continue their bid to win the prestigious trophy for the first time since 1991.

“I’ve been at this club since I was nine,” Campbell said. “And I used to come with my dad to the games and sit in the East Stand.

“I watched some of the boys who I went on to play with in the first team, so it’s good.

“I’m delighted to be playing.

“It would mean a lot to win the Scottish Cup this season but there is still a long way to go just now. Hopefully we can go to Hampden, put in a good performance and get us through to the final.

“There is ages to go, a lot of football to be played, but the dream is to try and win the cup here and hopefully we can.”

Motherwell go into the Rangers game this weekend on the back of a fine performance in the 0-0 home league draw against champions Celtic on March 18, when they secured a deserved point despite having Cedric Kipre red carded after just 41 minutes.

“It shows the great team spirit that we’ve got that to go down to 10 men yet not concede and get a draw,” Campbell said.

“I think the boys were all happy that we stuck together and they showed great character.

“The red card was disappointing but that’s football. When decisions go against you, you just have to pick yourselves up and stay as a team.

“And I think we did that.

“It gives us a lot of confidence going into the last few games before the split, Rangers, Aberdeen and St Johnstone coming up.

“So hopefully we can have the same sort of performance again, take it into those opponents and hopefully try and get a place in the top six.”

If the Steelmen are to sneak into the top six (realistically they’ll need two wins and a draw from their next three games to have a chance) they will need to avoid what was arguably their worst performance of the season so far in a 2-0 defeat at Hamilton Accies on March 10.

“I think our enthusiasm was out in that game,” the Scotland under-21 international added.

“It was just the final ball and getting on the ball, we were poor.

“That’s just football, sometimes you get your off days but you just have to bounce back.

“And I hope we showed the fans – it was disappointing for them travelling to a derby and seeing us getting beaten – that we bounced back.”
