Brian Caldwell says Motherwell expect a bumper fan attendance in their Premier Sports Cup semi-final against Rangers, as preparations continue for the match.

Stuart Kettlewell’s side are on the road to Dundee United on Wednesday night in the Premiership, but behind the scenes, work is commencing on preparing for Sunday’s match at Hampden. Motherwell have sold out coach travel for supporters from Fir Park and hospitality is also sold out.

The club will also have the Cooper Bar open from 11am with live music for supporters. Initially, Motherwell had been given an allocation of 7,000 which had the potential to increase to 14,000, with the club announcing on Tuesday that sales had risen beyond the 8,000 mark.

Caldwell says more tickets are coming the way of Motherwell and he’d expect the 300 extra briefs they receive to sell before Sunday’s match. A long-term aim is to sustain such crowds back at home at Fir Park and the amount of fans heading to Mount Florida give him encouragement.

Speaking to the Motherwell Times, Caldwell said on Tuesday on if the club needed more tickets: “We were down to about 18 last night (Monday) so around the 8,000 mark. They have agreed to move, I think it’s the segregation they have moved over, to get us another 300 tickets in the East Stand which is the cheaper ones.

“We had asked before if we could get them and move the segregation but because of the way the ticket sales have gone for both clubs, with us being down to 18, hopefully we get another 300 and I am sure we will sell them as well during this week. We are probably looking at over 8,000 Motherwell fans which is tremendous.

“You saw in the quarter-final vs Dundee United, we had over 6,000 home fans here on a Friday night. Everybody who was that will want to go to the game so it’s good we are attracting more and more people along. Our job is to try and go and play well on Sunday, hopefully people enjoy themselves and we can get these 8,000 people on a regular basis at Fir Park.

“That is the long-term aim. The whole town and area have got behind the football club and taking over 8,000 is double the number of supporters we had against Celtic, which is positive for the club going forward.”

It’s a busy time in and around Motherwell and Caldwell has plenty of praise for the staff who have been at the forefront of keeping up with demand. He’s hopeful all involved at Motherwell can enjoy a day to remember, with this the club’s first League Cup semi-final since 2017, when they beat Rangers 2-0.

He added: “It’s been a manic few weeks in the preparations, making sure ticketing goes ok. The ticket office staff have done tremendously as well, a lot of long hours, as well as the games that have been going on at the same time. We had Celtic at the weekend too so it’s been a busy time.

“We want to make sure from a preparation point of view, our supporters, our team, everybody else that goes there has a good day out.”
