8 former Rangers and Celtic stars who remain free agents including Europa League finalist and Hoops heroes

A look at some former Old Firm stars who remain free agents going in the winter.

As the countdown to the January transfer window ensues, there are still a number of talented ex SPFL Premiership stars who remain club-less.

The free agent market has been kind to Celtic this season as it is from there they signed Kelechi Iheanacho, who has scored some vitally important goals already in his short time in a green and white jersey. On the other side of city, Rangers have signed the likes of Jack Butland and Clinton Nsiala in recent years.

With some big name players still in the free agent market, here’s a look at eight former Old Firm stars that remain without a club, from Europa League finalists to Hoops Champions League Heroes:

Adam Devine (Rangers)

The versatile defender, who can be deployed on either side of the back line had a promising start to his Rangers career but was released in the summer. During his stint in Govan he had loan spells at Partick Thistle, Brechin City, Motherwell and Queens Park.

Barrie McKay (Rangers)

A tricky winger who could get a nutmeg in a phonebox, the former Hearts and Middlesbrough man will be remembered fondly at Ibrox for his screamer in the Scottish Cup semi-final against the Hoops. After leaving Tynecastle in the summer he is currently a free agent.

Victor Wanyama (Celtic)

The scorer of Celtic’s opener against Barcelona in that memorable Celtic Park upset is currently without a club after spending last season at Neil Lennon’s Dunfermline. At the age of 34, the Kenyan International is reaching the twilight years of his career.

Fraser Forster (Celtic)

Speaking of big performances against Barca, the Hoops hero was a colossal figure in the Celtic goal that day and has been a fan favourite ever since. He managed to win a Europa League medal with Spurs last season before being released.

Eoghan O’Connell (Celtic)

The Irishman made just seven appearances for Celtic during his three years at Parkhead. Most recently, he was a regular feature for Hollywood-backed Wrexham, helping them get promoted to the second tier for the first time since 1981.

Scott Sinclair (Celtic)

Another Hoops fan favourite, the Englishman was unplayable at times during Brendan Rodgers’ first spell after signing from Aston Villa. At 36 years old, perhaps his pace isn’t what it once was, as he was released from EFL League Two side, Bristol Rovers in the summer.

Borna Barisic (Rangers)

The Croatian had a promising start to his Ibrox career and was an assist-machine during their title-winning season. However, despite helping the side reach a Europa League final, his form dipped massively towards the end as he was sold to Trabzonspor.

Greg Stewart (Rangers)

A hero at Dundee, Stewart couldn’t stop scoring from right midfield in the 2014/15 season at Dens Park. His exploits got him a move to Birmingham City, where he then moved to Rangers after some successful loan spells. The 35-year old most recently played for Mohun Bagan in the Indian Super League.
