'Music to my ears' - Rangers transfer message sparks delight as it holds key to fixing summer window of woe
Barry Ferguson has been left encouraged by recent comments made by Rangers manager Danny Rohl
Barry Ferguson has been left feeling convinced and confident by what he’s heard coming out of Rangers lately.
The 47-year-old stepped in as interim manager at Ibrox following the sacking of Philippe Clement. Since taking charge temporarily and then seeing Russell Martin replace him on a permanent basis, something of a nightmare has unfolded at the club.
Rangers suffered their lowest ever win percentage (29%) under the tenure of Martin, who lasted just 123 days in charge before being shown the door. His time at Ibrox marked the shortest tenure ever served by a permanent head coach, leaving fans frustrated and with little hope for the remainder of the season.
Danny Rohl comments have ‘encouraged’ Barry Ferguson about Rangers future
New manager Danny Rohl has done well to get a lot of people on board with him since arriving at Ibrox. Since his appointment as the new Rangers manager, the German has led the Light Blues to an unbeaten run in the Scottish Premiership.
Rangers have won four of their last six league games and drawn the most recent two. Ferguson recently outlined Rangers’ problems as the team ‘losing its ruthless streak’. However, he has been left feeling ‘heartened’ and ‘encouraged’ by comments made by Rohl about the club’s plans to sign new players.
“People ask me where things are going wrong with Rangers. The answer is simple, my old club has lost its ruthless streak. Whether it’s on the park or off it, the win at all costs mentality which was drummed into me as a youngster has been lost along the way,” Ferguson wrote in his latest column for Record Sport.
“And that’s why I’ve been heartened by one or two messages which have come out of Ibrox over the course of the last few weeks.”
Danny Rohl will be ‘pleased’ with Rangers team improvement
Ferguson believes Rohl will have ‘been pleased’ with the intensity of his players’ approach to games and the overall improvement of the team. The finer details have changed recent results for Rangers, which is where Ferguson wants to see his former side improve.
“Ultimately, that’s where games of football are won and lost,” Ferguson continued. “And it’s where Rangers really need to rediscover a ruthless streak if they want to start clocking up results on a more consistent basis.
“Danny may have hoped he had turned a corner after rattling off four straight league wins but four points dropped in back to back matches against Falkirk and United have just underlined how much work still needs to be done.
“That’s why I was very encouraged the other day when he talked about recruiting players who know what it means to wear a Rangers shirt. As a matter of fact, that was music to my ears.
“He’s spot on and it was something I said myself during my short time in charge last season. It’s not enough to be a talented football player when you’re representing that badge. I saw plenty of them come and go during my own time - guys with tons of ability who struggled with the demands that were placed on them in Glasgow.”
Ferguson’s praise for Rohl continued as he outlined the approach to signing new players might have been ‘where the club has gone wrong’ in recent years.
“Put it this way, I’m not sure some of the people who have been in charge of making these decisions really understood what it was they were looking for.”
