Danny Rohl drives Sheffield Wednesday reunion bid at Rangers as 'fresh approach' made for ex Owls star
The former Sheffield Wednesday player is a star Rangers boss Danny Rohl knows well.
Danny Rohl is reportedly driving a bid to bring one of his trusted Sheffield Wednesday stars to Rangers this summer.
The Ibrox head coach is facing a huge transfer window after a poor end to the season saw Rangers finish third in the Premiership, piling pressure on him, ahead of next term. Rohl was Sheffield Wednesday boss before going to Govan and Josh Windass is said to be on his agenda.
The attack-minded star was at Rangers between 2016-2018 before joining Wigan. He’d leave the Latics two years later for a five-year stretch at Sheffield Wednesday and had a successful first season at Wrexham in the Championship this term. Now according to transfer journalist Ben Jacobs, Rohl wants to reunite with Windass, although Wrexham are not in a selling mood.
Josh Windass to Rangers latest
It’s claimed: “Rangers have made a fresh approach to Josh Windass to discuss bringing him back to Ibrox. It follows an attempt in January which Wrexham rebuffed. Move driven by Danny Rohl, who had Windass at Sheffield Wednesday. No club-to-club talks yet. Wrexham had indicated in January they didn't want to sell.”
Speaking on Open Goal over his exit from Rangers, Windass said: “I didn’t have an agent or anything. It was a bad decision. I was 23, I wanted a bigger wage. I was stupid. Steveb Gerrard came up to me and got me off the bus and told me, ‘They’ve put a bid in for you. I’ve got to tell you because you’re not going to leave to go there…’ and then I left.
“I instantly missed playing for Rangers. I was about to start. It was Maribor in the Europa League. “We had a Zoom call about six months later because I was going to go back on loan. Gerrard basically gave me what for. He told me everything that was wrong with me and how I could improve.”
Who do Rangers have as attacking options?
Windass has been a champion of Rohl and convinced outspoken talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan of his Ibrox credentials. Speaking after the win over Hearts earlier this year at Ibrox, Jordan said: “I spoke to Josh Windass about him and he was full of compliments (about Danny Rohl). The only thing Danny needs to say is: ‘Since I’ve arrived here, we’re top of the league in performances’. That’s his job. That’s what he was brought in to do. I do think these guys are going to hunt Hearts down and I saw that in the game yesterday, which I thought was a great spectacle in terms of the atmosphere for the Rangers-Hearts game.”
It’s not the only attacking move Rangers are making as they close in on Hearts talisman Lawrence Shankland. Youssef Chermiti, Bojan Miovski and Ryan Naderi are other out and out strikers while Thelo Aasgaard can play the number 10 role.
