Ex Rangers star makes Scottish football return as Premiership loan switch provides career revival opportunity
Forgotten man has spent the last 18 months at Wycombe in EFL League One
Rangers academy product Alex Lowry is looking forward to playing his football ‘back up the road’ as he joins Motherwell on a season-long loan deal from Wycombe Wanderers.
The attacking midfielder joined the Light Blues youth setup at the age of 10 and earned his full debut in January 2021. Despite early signs of promise, he only notched 14 appearances in the following two years and was in turn, loaned out to Hearts, which the Jambos terminated early. The 23-year old made the move from Rangers to Wycombe in January 2025 but has now returned north of the border.
Motherwell are still mourning the loss of season’s manager Jens Berthel Askou after he led them to a fourth place finish. The Dane then left the club for Ligue 1 side Toulouse in May. New boss Alfred Johansson is tasked with carrying on the momentum from last season and is excited to see what the ‘technically gifted’ Lowry has to offer. The Steelmen sold star man Elijah Just to Swansea City after his breakout successful campaign and are looking for replacements.

Motherwell boss delighted with ‘technically gifted’ Lowry signing
Speaking after getting the deal over the line, Johansson said: “We see this as a great opportunity for Alex and the club. He is a technically gifted footballer who enjoys being on the ball and being creative. His knowledge of Scottish football and experience here could prove vital over the next 12 months. We are pleased to make an addition to the squad, and now Alex can start training with his new teammates immediately. The staff behind the scenes have been meticulous in their scouting of Alex, and I have no doubt he will slot into our team well. I look forward to working with him and helping him develop over the next 12 months.”
Off the field issues and injury problems have hampered Lowry’s development so far in his career. When he came through at Rangers, he instantly looked like a player to watch, scoring early goals against Stirling Albion and Hearts. However a nasty knee injury he picked up in a B team match sidelined him for months. He also suffered a severe recurring back injury playing in England’s third tier.

Lowry on fresh start
The midfielder told his new club: “It’s great to be back up the road. Being a Scottish football fan, everyone knows Motherwell were an outstanding team last year. But having spoken to the manager, it’s already clear he has his own ideas for what he wants the team to look like, and I think even in these early stages, the identity is clear. I feel I can add to the already strong squad assembled here and I’m looking forward to kicking on this season.”
Motherwell received plaudits last season not just for their success in the standings but also their possession-based style of play. If Johansson continues to implement Askou’s philosophy, it would suit Lowry’s game down to the ground. To add to this, with Just leaving, there’s an attacking midfield void needing filled.
