Former Aston Villa and Sheffield United player 'among the options' for Rangers in late transfer window move
Rangers could make a move for the ex Aston Villa and Sheffield United man.
A former Aston Villa and Sheffield United striker has emerged on the Rangers transfer radar, it’s claimed.
The Premiership side are second in the league and four points off leaders Hearts ahead of this weekend’s trip to Hibs, and are seeking recruits up top ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline. Ryan Naderi of Hansa Rostock has been mentioned, as has Leeds United’s Joel Piroe, but now Cameron Archer at Southampton has got a mention.
His stock was high at Aston Villa as he emerged as a possible star up top in promising loan stints at Preston North End and Middlesbrough. He’d complete a permanent move to Sheffield United in 2023 after 14 outings for the Villans but scored just four times in 32 games for the Blades, and he signed for current club Southampton in 2024.
Cameron Archer to Rangers addressed
This season has also proved difficult, scoring four times in 23 matches, taking his overall Southampton tally to nine strikes across 63 outings. It’s claimed by Sky Sports, however, Rangers see the ex-Aston Villa and Sheffield United man as an option to boost their title fight should other deals flatline.
It’s stated: “Rangers are still working on a deal to add another forward during the final days of the transfer window. The Ibrox club remain keen on Hansa Rostock striker Ryan Naderi despite the German third division club rejecting a second bid worth around £3.1m.
“Sky Sports News has been told that Naderi, 22, wants to move to the Scottish Premiership club and would even consider being loaned back to the German side until the end of this season - if that would help facilitate his move to Glasgow. However, he is not the only target Rangers are looking at with Southampton's Cameron Archer among the options. It is thought Rangers will only add to their squad if the right deal becomes available.”
Who could leave Rangers before the end of transfer window?
Reporting also states that Sheffield United-linked Joe Rothwell and striker Danilo are amongst the contenders to leave Rangers before February 2nd’s deadline. Speaking on Thursday after a 3-1 loss to Porto in their Europa League finale, head coach Danny Rohl said: “We are competitive, but to win these games you need extra quality in the final third and this is what we have to work on.
“We have a lot of good options in defence. For me, it’s about how we can score more goals. When I compare this to my first game in Bergen, I see a big difference. We saw in the last four games a big step forward. But we should still understand in this competition we were not good enough to come through.
“Let’s do our job in the background. You can ask me again after the window and hopefully you’ll see what we did. We started well on the front foot and the first 15 minutes were how we wanted to play. We had some good ball-winning situations before the goal. At 1-1, we got there a step too late. Then 2-1 was too easy, a killer.
