Former Rangers and Sunderland star makes free transfer move as club 'extremely excited' over move
The former Rangers and Sunderland player has had a well-travelled career.
A former Rangers and Sunderland player has completed a free agent transfer move.
The transfer window may be shut but those without terms are still free to make moves. Jordan Jones was one of those players after finding himself hunting his next opportunity following a stint at Carlisle United in the National League. He has now joined South Shields in the National League North.
A Northern Ireland international, he joined Rangers in 2019 after an impressive stint in Scotland at Killie. He’d spent time out on loan at Sunderland during his Ibrox spell before leaving permanently for Wigan Athletic in 2021. Jones had been at Carlisle since his permanent Latics exit two years ago but now moves to another non-league outfit, who are managed by Mike Williamson.
Why has Jordan Jones joined South Shields?
Jones said: “I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to represent the club and build on the great relationship I have with the manager. It’s an opportunity to fall back in love with football and do whatever it takes to bring success to South Shields.”
A statement reads: “We are delighted to announce the signing of Northern Ireland international Jordan Jones, subject to FA and league approval! Jones links up with Mike Williamson and his squad, adding a wealth of EFL, SPFL, European, and international experience to the dressing room.
“The 31-year-old spent time with Premier League side Sunderland AFC during their time in League One, joining the Black Cats on loan from Scottish Premiership side Rangers during the 2020/21 season and would go on to lift the EFL Trophy.

What did South Shields say about signing Jordan Jones?
“The Northern Irish forward brings experience from across England and Scotland, as well as the European and international stage. During his time with Rangers, Jones made seven appearances in the UEFA Europa League and has represented Northern Ireland on numerous occasions, featuring in friendlies, World Cup qualifiers, and Nations League qualifiers. Jones has also spent time with fellow SPFL side Kilmarnock, where he made a significant impact in the Scottish top flight.
“He later joined Wigan Athletic in League One during the 2023/24 season, spending two seasons with the Latics. His most recent spell came with Carlisle United, where he spent two seasons competing in League Two and the National League. We’re extremely excited to welcome Jordan to South Shields and look forward to working with him.”
