Premiership boss makes his transfer intentions clear over Rangers outcast as club explore permanent deal
Dundee United eye permanent solution to keep highly-rated midfielder at Tannadice
Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin has made it clear that he would be interested in securing Rangers midfielder Lyall Cameron's services on a permanent basis, should the opportunity arise.
The 24-year-old moved to Ibrox from fellow Premiership side Dundee last summer but has found opportunities hard to come by under Danny Rohl and the German’s successor Derek McInnes.
A subsequent loan spell with Aberdeen followed during the second half of last season before Cameron embarked on another temporary move, this time to Tannadice after learning his game time would remain limited.

Cameron has wasted little time making his mark at United, establishing himself as an integral member of Goodwin's squad with a string of classy performances alongside Zidane Iqbal and Dylan Tait in the middle of the park.
His displays have clearly caught the attention of his Irish manager, who admits the Tangerines would be foolish not to consider a permanent deal if circumstances allowed.
Speaking about the possibility, Goodwin said: “I think we'd be stupid not to explore something like that if it were to be possible. We also need to be realistic. Lyall is on a long-term contract with Rangers, so, ultimately, he is their player, and I'm sure Derek McInnes is watching the way he is performing with interest.”
Goodwin sends clear message to Rangers
Cameron is contracted to Rangers until 2029, leaving the Light Blues in control of any decision regarding his future.
Nevertheless, Goodwin believes the former Scotland under-21 international’s positive experience on his return to Tayside could be an encouraging factor, with Cameron seemingly settled and enjoying his football again.
Goodwin added: “He is loving being at Dundee United; he feels at home here and knows exactly what we think of him. He's already a very important player for us. The main thing is that Lyall is enjoying his football and continues to do well; we'll enjoy him while he's here.”
Personal connection could prove vital to permanent deal hopes
United may struggle to compete financially with other interested clubs for Cameron. However, the player and his family have strong connections to Dundee United, having been lifelong supporters of the club. That could make Tannadice an attractive long-term destination as Rangers continue to monitor his progress.
Next summer’s transfer window could be crucial. If Cameron continues to thrive back in familiar surroundings, Rangers decide he isn't going to feature in their first-team plans and United can agree a financially realistic package, a permanent return becomes a genuine possibility.
