Rangers alerted of 'key area' overlooked in rebuild as ex Ibrox output machine proposed as transfer solution

Light Blues still have work to do in summer transfer window despite multiple early signings

Rangers have overlooked wingers in their summer rebuild so far according to Cammy Bell - but the former Ibrox stopper believes signing Vaclav Cerny would solve their issues in this ‘key area’.

The Besiktas right winger has been linked with a move back to Ibrox, where he registered 18 goals and nine assists during the 2024/25 season while on loan from Wolfsburg. While the player is open to a move away from his current side, reports suggest Rangers have already had a bid rejected for Cerny and that he might just exceed their price range.

New Rangers manager Derek McInnes has wasted no time putting his stamp on the squad. The Light Blues have already made six summer signings, however none of the new boys are able to play out wide. Former Kilmarnock and Dundee United man Bell believes this an area Rangers will have to strengthen between now and the end of the window, and that Cerny is an ideal solution.

Rangers transfer target offers solution to problem position

Bell told the BBC Scottish Football Podcast: “Out wide. That’s the key areas for me Rangers need to improve in. You look at Cerny. I think he was a good player when he was at Rangers. If he'd been there longer, think he would have improved even further with the club. So I don't think that would be a bad move if they can make it happen. He obviously already understands the expectations of the club.

"They struggled last season. They brought in a number of players, and they have done over the last few windows, that haven't worked. A top, top winger that's going to play at the top level week in, week out is difficult to find. But I think Cerny would be a really good move because we’ve already seen flashes at Rangers, and who knows what would’ve happened if he stayed longer.”

At the age of 28, Cerny recently took the decision to retire from the Czechia National Team after being omitted from their World Cup squad. His current club Besiktas are reportedly pursuing an ambitious deal for Liverpool’s Mo Salah, to add to Leandro Trossard, who they’ve already acquire from Arsenal. If they continue to bring in this standard of wingers, the Istanbul side may be more inclined to sell Cerny.

Ferguson deal ‘out of reach’ for Rangers

The Light Blues have also been linked with Bologna captain Lewis Ferguson, who is reportedly valued at around £17m. Rangers are hoping to receive eight figures for their midfield maestro Nico Raskin as a large chunk of that deal being reinvested could make a Ferguson swoop more realistic, however Bell thinks the Scotsman is out of their reach for the time being.

He continued: "I think all Rangers fans would absolutely love him to have him [Ferguson] at the club. It would be a brilliant signing for Rangers. But, realistically, I think it is probably just out of Rangers' reach at the moment. Although it will be dependent on what happens with Raskin.”
