Rangers boss 'exploring' move for set-piece specialist as Danny Rohl targets backroom staff reinforcements
Ibrox boss eyeing a specialist coach to solve a recurring issue in addition to someone with close connections to the club
Rangers head coach Danny Rohl is exploring the possibility to making two new additions to his first-team coaching team as he continues to settle into his new role at Auchenhowie.
Despite suffering a Premier Sports Cup semi-final defeat to Celtic at Hampden and back-to-back Europa League losses against SK Brann and Roma, the German has got his Ibrox reign of to an encouraging start with three Premiership wins in a row.
However, there’s still plenty of work to be done and the Rangers Review report that Rohl is assessing his options to bring in a couple of new coaches, one of whom will be a set piece specialist.
It’s claimed Rohl has already spoken to potential candidates to work alongside performance manager Sascha Lense and assistant coach Matthias Kaltenbach and is giving ‘serious’ thought over who to add to his backroom staff during the international break.
A set-piece coach features high on his agenda following the recent departure of Mike Williamson, who previously filled that remit during Russell martin’s short-lived tenure.
The Light Blues have been heavily criticised for both their ability to score, and prevent goals, from dead ball (free-kick and corner) situations in recent seasons, making it a major area of potential improvement for Rohl to target.
It’s also thought that he will add a Scottish coach with close connections to the club with the likes of Neil McCann, Steven Davis and Steven Smith all under consideration to give Rohl an additional pair of hands on the training ground.
Performance coach Rhys Owen and goalkeeping coach Sal Bibbo were retained following Martin’s exit, with the latter reuniting with his former Hillsborough boss upon Rohl’s appointment on a long-term deal.
Rangers went into the break after earning a 3-0 league win over Dundee at Dens Park last Sunday to move them within 12 points of leaders Hearts, who have played a game more.
Rohl’s men return to domestication action against Livingston next weekend before the Europa League visit of Braga.
Danny Rohl wants to see “forward steps” continue after international break
Speaking after his side’s victory in Tayside, Rohl said: “At first I’m very happy that we’ve now won three games in a row. I think when I arrived we had (nine) points. Now we have nine points in three games.
“I think this is huge, as is keeping clean sheets. That’s helpful. To win 3-0 is good but we know our expectations are high. I’m here to builf up something but not just wins.
“We want to do more but it takes steps and I think it’s important to understand that after wins, we are not straight up in one direction and to a good balance and I want to see a step forward. At the moment I see forward steps, even if everything is not perfect.”
