Rangers contract claims have been made around a star.

A Rangers extension claim has been made - just as the star in question was left rueing a defeat against Kilmarnock.

The Light Blues are now six points behind rivals Celtic and Aberdeen in the Premiership title race, losing 1-0 at Rugby Park to a Marley Watkins goal. Philippe Clement’s side had a chance to make it a three-point gap but have now left themselves open to criticism with a below-par game.

Before the game, coming off the back of strong performances for Scotland, Rangers hero Kris Boyd revealed his belief that the club are in contract talks with John Souttar over an extended stay. He said on Sky Sports: “Philippe Clement has come in and I do feel sorry for a way that he has to be bullish and nobody is going to leave.

“It’s very difficult to get players tied down on contracts if they don’t want to do it as well. There could be players leave... I believe John Souttar is in discussions to sign a new deal as well which would be a good coup for the club as he is one that has improved.

“He’s got a mistake in him, everybody has, but he has improved and that comes from playing games on a regular basis in his natural position, his natural side. It was difficult for him on the left-hand side.

Then in the game, it was Souttar who lost out in a physical duel with Watkins before the striker deflected the ball off him and into the net. Co-commentator James McFadden dug up Souttar’s role in the goal. He added: “It’s been a great performance from Kilmarnock all afternoon.

“Neraysho Kasanwirjo is playing him (Watkins) on. Souttar doesn’t deal with it. Watkins makes sure he gets the first contact which is enough to put him off balance.”
