Nils Koppen outlines Rangers transfer ambitions as he makes stunning £800,000 revelation at AGM

The Light Blues board have come under fire for a number of transfer decisions that were made over the summer

Rangers technical director Nils Koppen has revealed that he is working hard to assure supporters that the mistakes made at boardroom level over the summer aren’t repeated in the upcoming January transfer window.

Koppen is tasked with improving Rangers’ recruitment strategy to give Philippe Clement’s team the best chance of climbing back to the top of the Scottish Premiership table after a tricky fall from grace since reigning supreme under Steven Gerrard in 2021.

Speaking at the club’s AGM on Thursday, he outlined their ambitions to recruit young and up and coming prospects: “We have to have a young and dynamic team with a good balance to compete at all the levels required in European and domestic leagues.

“There’s a big demand to dominate in the league, to progress in Europe, and to really compete in Europe. It’s really what we try to achieve by getting this squad in the best possible balance.

“We need players that are technical, good athletes, players who are cost-reliable because we’re in a unique environment, we play a lot of games, so we have to be ready for that.”

Koppen did however, also indicate that experience and leadership cannot be overlooked.

“It’s a very unique setting that we cannot find in the rest of Europe. In addition to the young players, we also need leadership experience to guide these players on and off the pitch, to give them the best opportunity to develop and create an ideal team to also be able to win in all circumstances.” He added.

Rangers currently find themselves third in the table and a seemingly insurmountable 11 points behind runaway leaders and archrivals Celtic.

Early results have only amplified the pressure surrounding Philippe Clement’s future at Ibrox, but slowly but surely players like Jefte and Hamza Igamane are starting to show signs of promise.

The Light Blues made wholesale changes over the summer to lower their average squad age from 29.7 to 23.5, according to Rangers News.

However, the manner in which it was done and the lack of revenue generated from player sales has been judged by some supporters as financial mismanagement with the team making a combined £800,000 from the sales of four senior players.

One fan said at the meeting: “The fact we sold 4 players for £800k which is well under their market value is a sackable offence in any walk of life,” suggested one fan, whilst another was quick to remark that this isn’t a new issue, “Our transfer strategy has been utterly abysmal for years (going as far back as the 90’s)”.

Another supporter on social media added: “Mental, abysmal and beyond concerning.”
