Rangers player ratings vs Motherwell as top rated aces and flops named by stats experts amid damaging loss
Here’s how the stats experts rated Rangers players in a dire loss to Motherwell.
Rangers lost 3-2 against Motherwell in their latest Premiership clash, a huge blow for their title ambitions.
The visitors sparked half-time booing at Ibrox after a dominant first half had them ahead through Lukas Fadinger and Emmanuel Longelo strikes. Youssef Chermiti got Rangers back in it shortly after the restart and a raft of half-time changes. Nico Raskin got the last touch on a Rangers corner routine to bring proceedings back level amid a much improved second half for the hosts. Longelo then scored as 90 minutes approached to leave Rangers third with four games to go.
Given Celtic’s win on Saturday put them down to third and with Hearts not kicking off until 16:30, Rangers had a big chance to make a title race statement. They faced an opponent that had given them plenty of problems across two draws and a narrow win for the Ibrox hosts in December but a pre-match atmosphere of raucous proportions set the scene for a big battle.
That occasion was not met by Rangers players as Motherwell dominated the first half. The only blessing for the hosts was that it wasn’t more than a two-goal deficit they were facing as Jens Berthel Askou’s side cut through those in blue at will. Lukas Fadinger dispatched low beyond Jack Butland and soon after it was two when Emmanuel Longelo finished off a sweeping away move.
Light Blues boss Danny Rohl hadn’t got it right from the outset but a change in shape to give Rangers more muscle in midfield proved fruitful. Chermiti burst past Paul McGinn to half the deficit and then set-pieces proved king again as one routine was eventually bundled over the Motherwell line. It felt as if a Rangers winner had a stage set for it and Hearts going a goal down in Leith only added to the atmosphere as both they, Rangers and Celtic stood on 70 points.
Then dismay struck. Motherwell punished a sleeping Rangers with Stephen O’Donnell’s pass finding Longelo, who put it into the net as second half stoppage time beckoned, via a deflection off Emmanuel Fernandez. It was a game of chaos and one that could end up costing Rangers the title. Here’s how stats experts FOTMOB rated the Rangers players via their metrics.
Jack Butland - 4.6/10
Not a lot he could do for the goals but distribution perhaps left a bit to be desired at times.
Dujon Sterling - 6.6./10
A brutal first half as Motherwell ran amok down the flanks. Better in second and booked.
Nasser Djiga - 6.4/10
Looked back to the shaky version of the Wolves loanee. Better in second half but first 45 left them exposed.
Emmanuel Fernandez - 5.6/10
Had plenty of plaudits and does well for the second goal but passed around at times by Motherwell. Then has to be better for the winner.
Jayden Meghoma - 5.9/10
Similar to Sterling but perhaps targeted more by Motherwell. Sub at break reflected that.
Tochi Chukwuani - 6.4/10
Totally overrun in the first half and subbed at the break.
Nico Raskin - 7.9/10
Drove the team on the second and credited with a goal.
Thelo Aasgaard - 7.8/10
Always a curious one. Fans demand more from him but earns high markings as per the stats metrics. Rohl clearly likes him too.
Djeidi Gassama - 6.4/10
Not enough attacking impact in first half. A little better after the break.
Youssef Chermiti - 8.5/10
A day that summed him up. Scores and assists but also misses big chances. Hot and cold throughout the game.
Bojan Miovski - 6.4/10
Handed a chance after great impact at Falkirk but quiet here and subbed at break.
Subs used: James Tavernier, Mohamed Diomande, Mikey Moore, Max Aarons, Connor Barron.
