Rangers' SPFL Premiership rivals lift lid on Ibrox transfer rumours for striker who's bagged double-figures
The Motherwell forward has been in fine form this season and has inevitably attracted outside interest.
As the January transfer window reaches the halfway mark, Danny Rohl is still looking to bolster his Rangers squad.
New boy Tochi Chukwuani got his first Ibrox minutes in Friday night’s Scottish Cup win over Annan Athletic, while Wolfsburg loanee Andreas Skov Olsen was announced before the match. The Rangers boss has also enlisted Westerlo left back, Tuur Rommens, however he is carrying a knock, therefore isn’t set to feature for a few weeks. In the game itself, Rangers emerged comfortable 5-0 victors despite playing their B team.
Rohl has already been a busy man, however the Rangers boss appears not to be resting on his laurels. A new number nine was identified as a transfer target for the Light Blues before the window, however so far they have only signed a central midfielder, a left back and a winger.
In terms of a new striker, The Gers are reportedly looking closer to home than their previous additions, with Hibernian’s Kieron Bowie on Rohl’s radar, as well as rumours emerging that Motherwell marksman, Tawanda Maswanhise could also be headed to Ibrox. Amid the Govan links, Steelmen Chiefs have responded to the likelihood of their talisman moving on.
Maswanhise Rangers links ‘news to’ Motherwell
According to the Daily Record: “Rumours have swept the internet claiming Rangers are in talks with Motherwell over a swoop for striker Tawanda Maswanhise. But that’s news to Fir Park chiefs. Steelmen sources have told Record Sport there’s been no discussions with the Ibrox side over a possible move for the 23-year-old Zimbabwe international.”
The striker scored in Motherwell’s stalemate at Easter Road last weekend on his return from the Africa Cup of Nations. His tidy Easter Road finish took him to 10 league goals for the season, just one behind Premiership top scorer Lawrence Shankland. He also has two assists to his name for a high-flying Motherwell side.
Motherwell boss Jens Berthel Askou will be hoping to keep his star man over the January window, with the club set for their highest league position in five years. Playing the Dane’s revolutionary brand of football, they currently sit in fourth place and have the best record against the big three.
Motherwell to fend off Ibrox raid
Rangers have also been linked with another of Motherwell’s key men, Elliot Watt, who is a boyhood Light Blues fan. However, the midfielder, who won last month’s SPFL Premiership Player of the Month, has picked up a muscle injury that will see him sidelined until February.
Askou believes it is important The Well hold on to their key men going into the second half of the season. After the Hibs draw, he said: “that’s the main plan, to make sure that this team gets the maximum out of this group of players, gets the maximum out of this season and then we know in the summer it’s a bigger window.
“So that’s the main track for us and then obviously there’s a few gaps here and there and we’ll see if we can fill them with quality like we did in the summer. There were a lot of gaps we had to fill.”
