Rangers told to launch Sheffield Wednesday transfer raid for ace bound to be 'worth a hell of a lot of money'
Rangers have been linked with a move for the Sheffield Wednesday player.
A former Rangers player insists the club could do a lot worse than raid Sheffield Wednesday for a star he knows well.
Gareth McCauley is a Northern Irish football legend and has moved into coaching within the international set-up since retiring from playing. The centre-back retired after a spell at Rangers and has kept tabs on the Ibrox club since, well aware of links to Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Pierce Charles, who he’s worked with on the Northern Irish youth scene.
Charles has impressed at Hillsborough amid dire financial circumstances that has sent the club down to League One from the English Championship. Despite a tough season, McCauley is in awe of the goalkeeper, who he feels is different from other stoppers. Rangers are linked with a move for him and the ex-defender reckons a raid on Wednesday would see Ibrox head coach Danny Rohl pocket a major asset. Rohl worked with Charles during his head coach tenure at the Owls.
What Sheffield Wednesday player could join Rangers?
He said in an interview with the Daily Record: “I had Pierce with the Northern Ireland Under-19s. He gives the game a completely different dimension. People have said to me he’s too small but I say he’s not because he’s so agile. He’s got such quick feet that he gets around the goal. And his distribution is just on a different level.
“He’s a really top player and if Rangers could get him they’d have a massive sellable asset on their hands. He’d play more games, get exposure in Europe, so a move there would be great for both parties. To me, Rangers is the top club in the world. But if Pierce stays injury-free, I can see this kid, with his temperament, becoming a goalkeeper worth a hell of a lot of money who plays in some of the world’s biggest games.
“He’s THAT good. I don’t like putting pressure on young players but he’s such a level-headed boy, it won’t faze him. He’s now in our full national side and he’s a hell of a player.”
What do Sheffield Wednesday think of Pierce Charles?
Owls boss Henrik Pedersen is also a big fan of the Northern Irish stopper as he is convinced that a major future awaits after battling in brutal circumstances at Hillsborough. Speaking after a 1-1 draw with Leicester City, Pedersen said: "He is a fantastic goalkeeper.
“Normally we speak about Pierce being top with his feet, today how also showed how mentally strong he is and how strong he is defensively. Top performance from him. I think there's nobody that has doubt for his potential. He has a big, big future, that's why we are really, really proud and really happy that he's a part of Sheffield Wednesday. We will do everything we can to keep him for the future."
