Rangers set to pull off surprise contract extension as player 'rejects' Leeds United interest

The latest Rangers transfer news with midfielder set for Ibrox stay despite West Ham and Nottingham Forest links.

The manager situation at Ibrox is expected to be resolved soon with Danny Roh’s leaving to join Red Bull Salzburg and Derek McInnes arriving from Hearts to replace him as Rangers head coach.

It has been a quick and unexpected turn of events that could very well result in some major changes to the Glasgow club’s summer transfer plans. McInnes will be linking up with his former Hearts captain and top scorer Lawrence Shankland who signed for the Gers last month.

Meanwhile, Danny Rohl has reportedly left Rangers with a ‘parting gift’ in the form of a surprise contract extension for one player. The young midfielder had been attracting interest from the likes of Leeds United and was previously expected to leave the club this month.

Rangers agree Bailey Rice contract extension despite interest from Leeds United and others

Per a report by the Daily Record, Bailey Rice is set to reject interest from England and sign a contract extension with Rangers. The 19-year old, who missed the bulk of last season through injury, had plenty of suitors south of the border with Leeds United the club most frequently linked with his signature.

Aston Villa, Nottingham Forrest and West Ham United were all also thought to be monitoring his situation. There was also further reported interest from Europe with Dutch giants Ajax and German outfit Schalke 04 credited with an interest in the Scotland under 21 international.

It is claimed that Rice will put pen to paper on his new deal at Ibrox later this week, extending the former Motherwell youth player’s stay in Glasgow. Supporters will be hoping he can make more of an impact on the first team next season having put his injury problems behind him.

Rangers midfielder poised to fulfil potential after injury issues

Rice looked on track for a breakthrough season with Rangers last campaign but a knee injury early in the season would end up ruling him out for most of the campaign. He had made 12 first team appearances during the 2024/25 season including in the UEFA Europa League against Manchester United and Nice.

The Scotland youth international, who has represented his country from under 16 up to under 21 level, was snapped up by Rangers from Motherwell’s youth academy. He signed his first professional contract in 2023 and made his first team debut in February that year when he came off the bench in a 3-0 win away to Livingston as an 88th minute replacement for Glen Kamara.

He made two further Scottish Premiership appearances in the 2024/25 season, both as a late substitute, against Motherwell and St Mirren. He received his first call up to the Scotland under 21 squad in March last year and has been capped twice at that level.

The transfer window officially opened in both Scotland and England on June 15. It comes against the backdrop of the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals continue today with France vs Senegal the pick of the fixtures, kicking off at 8pm UK time.
