Rangers star being lined up to replace five time Bundesliga winner as £15.5m price-tag touted

The latest Rangers transfer news with a current Ibrox player reportedly wanted by Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Leverkusen.

It could end up being a summer of significant change at Rangers with the transfer window now officially open and players already moving clubs.

Head coach Danny Rohl is leaving Ibrox to take over at Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg and Hearts manager Derek McInnes has agreed to replace him at the Glasgow club. The former Aberdeen and St Johnstone boss will link up with his top scorer from last season Lawrence Shankland who signed for the Gers last month.

The focus will of course be on getting new players in but there could very well be some current stars who move away from Rangers this summer. One player, who supporters probably wouldn’t want to see exit, is said to be under consideration by a heavyweight of European football to replace a retiring superstar.

Borussia Dortmund linked with Rangers Emmanuel Fernandez as replacement for 49-times capped German international

A report from OneFootball says that Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez has been lined up by German giants Borussia Dortmund. The centre back is seen as a replacement for 49-times capped German international Niklas Sule who is retiring.

The former Bayern Munich man, who won five Bundesliga titles with the Bavarian outfit, is only 30-years-old but has made the decision to hang up his boots due to injury. It cuts short a stellar career where Sule made over 100 appearances for TSG Hoffenheim as well as Bayern before being part of the Dortmund side that finished as runners-up in the 2024 UEFA Champions League final.

Fernandez, a commanding presence in both boxes who scored seven goals in 33 appearances across all competitions for Rangers last season, is said to be valued at €18 million (around £15.5 million) which would represent a significant profit for the Ibrox club. He was signed last summer for an undisclosed fee that was believed to be around £3.5 million from English Football League outfit Peterborough United.

Dortmund aren’t the only Bundesliga side being linked with a move for the 24-year-old either. Reports elsewhere have previously credited Bayern Leverkusen with being interested in his signature.

Rangers defender Fernandez earning transfer interest after impressive debut season at Ibrox

Fernandez was part of Brentford’s youth academy before beginning his senior career with English Football League outfit Gillingham. He couldn't breakthrough at the League Two club and spent time on loan at non-league clubs Sheppey United and Margate before signing for Ramsgate of the Isthmian League South East Division in 2020.

However, Peterborough recognised his potential and quickly brought him to London Road before loaning him out to Spalding United. He then had a loan spell with Barnet before returning to Peterborough and breaking into their first team.

His form for Rangers this season has seen him recognised on the international stage where he earned his first cap for Nigerian and has represented his country three times in total. He signed a for year contract when he arrived at Rangers, meaning he still has three years remaining on that deal so the club will be able to hold out for a significant transfer fee before letting him leave.
