Pundit says 17 goal attacker 'considering' Rangers transfer opportunity after conversation
The latest Rangers transfer news with TalkSport commentator Simon Jordan making an interesting claim about a Wrexham player.
Rangers can return to focusing on the summer transfer window now that the manager situation at Ibrox has been resolved.
Danny Rohl officially completed his move to Red Bull Salzburg on Wednesday with Derek McInnes confirmed as the new head coach at the Glasgow club just hours later. He has been reunited with his former Hearts skipper Lawrence Shankland who was the Gers first summer signing.
Yesterday saw the release of the SPFL fixtures and it will be a trip to Tannadice to take on Dundee United in McInnes’ first domestic fixture. Supporters will be hoping to see plenty more new faces in the door before then and there could even be a shock return for a once popular former player.
TalkSport pundit Simon Jordan reveals conversation with former Rangers favourite about potential Ibrox return
Speaking on TalkSport earlier this week, former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan revealed he recently had a conversation with Wrexham forward Josh Windass about the 32-year-olds future.
He claims that the the one time Rangers favourite ‘considering an opportunity’ to return to Ibrox this summer. However, the pundit was not prepared to go into any further detail.
He said: “I was talking to Josh Windass on the plane [to the USA for the FIFA World Cup]. There was a perception that he might have been potentially considering an opportunity to go to Rangers.”
Host Jim White responded, seeking clarity, by asking: "What Josh? To go back to Rangers?”. Jordan responded: "Yeah, but I am not going to talk on behalf of Josh, because Josh has a contract at Wrexham."
Popular former Rangers player has been EFL stand-out since 2018 Ibrox departure
It has been eight years since Windass left Rangers where he had established himself as a popular player with supporters. The forward, who is comfortable as an attacking midfielder or a striker, scored 18 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions during the 2017/18 campaign.
However, as he explained at the time, the Englishman didn’t feel valued at Rangers and left the club in the summer of 2018 to join English Football League Championship outfit Wigan Athletic. The son of former Aberdeen and Hull City striker Dean Windass had a less memorable stint at the Latics and would join their league rivals Sheffield Wednesday on loan in January 2020.
The Owls made that move permanent the following summer and Windass went on to establish himself as a key player at Hillsborough. Despite contributing ten goals in the 2020/21 season he couldn’t stop Wednesday from being relegated but played a key role in their promotion back to the second tier two years later.
The 2024/25 season saw his best goal return with 13 in the Championship but financial troubles at the club meant he would leave in the summer and was snapped up by big spending Wrexham. He scored an impressive 17 goals in all competitions for the Welsh outfit last season as they narrowly missed out on the play-offs and a shot at promotion to England’s Premier League.
