Rangers Deadline Day transfer target absent from latest fixture as Ibrox interest ‘steps up’

Danny Rohl is eager to add more firepower to his squad before the transfer window closes

Rangers are now in ‘pole position’ to secure a late loan signing before the transfer window slams shut later this evening.

Danny Rohl is eager to bolster his side with extra firepower for the last months of the season as they eye an attack on Hearts’ top spot. Both Rangers and Celtic have massively improved their form but the Jambos remain clear as they lead the Scottish Premiership title charge.

As Rangers enter the final hours of the transfer window, they are edging closer to a loan deal for Southampton forward Cameron Archer.

Rangers ‘in pole position’ to sign Cameron Archer from Southampton

According to Record Sport, Rangers are leading the charge to sign Archer on loan for the remainder of the season.

The 24-year-old signed for Southampton in 2024 in a £15 million move from Sheffield United. Since his arrival, he has been a regular asset for the Saints but this season has presented fewer opportunities than normal.

Archer did not make it off the bench against former club Sheffield United and Portsmouth earlier this month, and he was completely absent from Southampton’s latest meeting with Stoke City.

His absence from the latest Championship clash comes while Rangers have ‘stepped up’ their interest in bringing him to Ibrox. Archer is also attracting interest from clubs in England and overseas but the Light Blues are ‘close’ to getting a loan deal over the line.

Manager addresses Cameron Archer exit links

Southampton manager Tonda Eckert was pressed for information on Archer’s situation following the Saints’ 2-0 win on the road against Stoke on Saturday.

“There’s been some conversations going on over the last few days, and I also think there will be some news over the next two days,” the German coach admitted.

“I wish I could say something but these last days they’re always busy and there are so many conversation in both directions. Also for players coming in. Let’s just see what the next days bring.”

Archer has spent all of his career so far in England and has played in both the EFL Championship and the Premier League. He made his senior debut for Aston Villa in 2019 and was sent on loan three times before eventually joining Sheffield United in 2023. He is under contract with Southampton until 2028.
