Sheffield United send honest transfer update on Rangers and Celtic target as they vow not to be 'mugged off'

Rangers and Celtic have been linked with a transfer move for the Sheffield United star.

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has provided an update on a reported target of both Rangers and Celtic.

The Old Firm rivals have both been linked with Blades forward Tyrese Campbell, who has scored six goals from 34 games this term, at English Championship level. He is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury but the rumours of what comes next are abound as he approaches the final 12 months of his deal at Sheffield United, alongside midfielder Gustavo Hamer.

Wilder has been asked about the contract situations and named Campbell as one the standout situations they’ll need to sort. They are not keen for players to run down their Sheffield United deals and there is a desire not to be ‘mugged off’ in proceedings. There was also an honest assessment of Campbell, who’s six goals this term do not stack up against the 11 he netted the previous season.

Sheffield United contract updates

Speaking ahead of a game with Watford, Wilder said: “Well yeah, there'll be the financial aspects of it looking at players, so we'll treat everyone on its own individual basis and merit. The two big ones are the obvious standouts in Tyrese and Gus, so talks with their agents and talks with the players as well. Do you want to be part of things going forward as well? So yeah, there's a lot of discussion between all of the parties between now and the end of the season.

“So discussions regarding the player, does he want to stay, or does he want to go? Agents too but still under contract as well. So there's still a lot of stuff there flying about, if the player wants to go and there's no interest in him, then he's here for the next season. So it's an obvious one that we don't like players running down the contracts, especially when the club paid quite a bit of money for Gus as well.

“But I think there's a lot of moving parts to a lot of things between now and the end of the season and even going into maybe two or three weeks afterwards to set us up. I think one of the big things is there will be players that we'll come to financial settlements with, but still there'll be other players that a lot of decisions still to be made. We're talking to them. Gus is in the team and playing well.

What have Sheffield United said about Rangers and Celtic target?

“Didn't want to take him off on Saturday. It was important that we kept him on the pitch. He's arguably been our best player since I've come back last year. He was fantastic. He's had a difficult season, like a lot of the players have this year, but he's an asset. He's one of the best players in the Championship but he's got to decide his future as well.

“And Tyrese was outstanding last year. He's not hit the heights at all this year. So, if he re-signs, then great and then it's up to us and him to get him back to the standards that he set in that season. Still think there's a player in there, but as always, the question will be do you want to be part of our new journey?

“And if they don't, then we'll do our best to facilitate that and make things happen without getting mugged off by somebody just offering or low-balling us on a price that we don't think is reasonable for us.”
