Rob Roy weather beaten yet again

Kirkintilloch Rob Roy were beaten by the weather once more then their Super League game with Glenafton at Guy's Meadow on Saturday was called off.

Rabs have played just twice since October 31 - a 4-1 West of Scotland Cup win at Troon in mid-November and a 1-0 league win at Pollok in mid-December.

And manager Stewart Maxwell admitted: “It’s frustrating because that’s just one game we’ve had in 10 weeks.

“We managed to get a training session in and we had a game against Glencairn at Glasgow Green on Monday night to keep things ticking over.

“I don’t think our fitness levels have dropped that much because we’re continuing to train hard but rustiness does creep in and you lose that little bit of match sharpness.

“Having said that no-one else has been playing much either so everyone is in the same boat.”

With a slightly milder forecast Maxwell is hoping the rearranged Glenafton game will go ahead this Saturday - and if it does he’s expecting a difficult encounter from a team his side beat 2-0 at Glenafton on the opening day of the season.

He said: “They had a poor start to the season but have tweaked on or two things since then and they are going really well.

“They have put themselves in a challenging position and can go above us if they can take three points from us on Saturday so I’m expecting a really difficult game.

“In the past few years Auchinleck have run away with the title but I don’t think anyone will be doing that this time round. I think there are two or three teams who could be in contention.

“But you won’t hear any title talk from myself or the players. At the start of the season our aim was survival and that’s still the case.

“I think we’re maybe just two or three wins away from that now and once we achieve that we can have another look at things and reassess our aims but until then we’ll just keep churning away and take it game by game.”
