Despite competing well in the first half, Rabs had no answer to Auchinleck’s power play in the second half and had ’keeper Jordan Brown to thank for keeping the hosts’ tally to two.

Rabs squandered an early chance to snatch the lead when Willie Sawyers laid the ball back to Steven Aitken but the striker was slow in pulling the trigger and ’keeper Leishman made an easy save.

Minutes later Aitken sent Kevin Watt through on goal but he was halted by a well-timed Willie Lyle tackle.

Rabs were hit with a sucker punch in the 18th minute when Bryan Young whipped over a corner and the unmarked Dwayne Hyslop headed past Brown.

Just before half-time Brown did well to parry wide a fierce Keir Milliken shot and then comfortably hold a Hyslop header.

After the break Milliken was wide with a 20-yard volley before the Beechwood Park side extended their lead in the 53rd minute when Hyslop advanced into the Rabs penalty box before unleashing a super strike into the top corner.

Talbot pushed forward looking to add to their tally and from a Pope cross Milliken blazed wildly over before Pope sent his effort agonisingly past Brown’s left hand post.

Pope then attempted a low drive but the Rabs keeper was equal to it, diving low to push the ball wide.

In a rare Rabs break upfield, substitute Gavin Mackie fired over the Talbot bar, but the home side continued to enjoy the majority of the play.

Young headed a free-kick over, Brown again saved from Lyle and substitute Wilson headed against the top of the goal-frame as Auchinleck avenged their defeat at Guy’s Meadow earlier in
the season.
