New Coin Holdings Cup, first round

Cumbernauld United had a reasonably comfortable win on Saturday at Guy’s Meadow against Central District First league opponents Lesmahagow in the New Coin Holdings Cup 1st round.

Lesmahagow had made a great start to season 2014/2015 having only lost one Sectional League game and being undefeated in their league fixtures. In the first half of this Cup tie, however, the home team’s Superleague experience showed and United went in at the break with a cosy two goal advantage.
After the interval, however, for a spell the visitors upped their game, Cumbernauld lost a bit of their rhythm and there were a few scares before United finished the match as a contest with a third goal from the penalty spot to end
good winners.

Manager John Queen selected an United team with an emphasis on attacking football for this important Cup tie. For the initial 20 minutes it was end to end stuff with neither goalkeeper being really tested. A good Ross Foley low ball across goal saw Davie Dickson try to get the ball to his left foot for a shot only to be crowded out.

In the 21st minute United took the lead. Gary Carroll latched on to a ball from midfield, got the better of a Lesmahagow defender and passed to Ross Foley. The young forward then coolly despatched the ball past visiting goalkeeper Derek Barnes to put the home team ahead – Ross’ seventh goal of the season so far.

Five minutes later United were two goals up when a Jim Steele right foot shot was fumbled by the Lesmahagow keeper low at the post and entered the net.

United’s tails were up and they took complete control of the game playing some excellent football. The defence was firm, the midfield strong and Gavin Mackie, Ross Foley and Gary Carroll were giving the visitors defenders a hard time up front.
