Cumbernauld United recorded their third successive victory in the Sectional League Cup on Saturday when, after a dour struggle against local rivals Kirkintilloch Rob Roy, substitute Ross Foley scored the all important winning goal two minutes before the final whistle.

This result has placed United in a very strong position to top their section and qualify for the quarter finals of the competition, a feat not achieved for many years.

Rob Roy kicked off Saturday’s match with wind advantage and immediately made tracks towards the Cumbernauld goal, forcing a couple of corners. Then striker Steven Aitken had a chance but his effort went wide.

United replied when James Brown tried his luck after meeting a Gavin Mackie cross but his shot also went past the post.

The visitors continued to have the edge early on and Aitken had another opportunity to put them ahead but again his drive at goal lacked direction.

Despite the visitors’ pressure it was United who almost took the lead when Gary Carroll won a corner and Gavin Mackie’s flagkick caused mayhem in the box. Unfortunately for the homesters the ball was scrambled away to safety.

Former United player Dom O’Halloran then brought out a great save from Barry Fraser in the Cumbernauld goal. Dom’s shot-cum-cross was expertly tipped over the bar by the United keeper, signed this season from Thorniewood.

As the half progressed United improved and efforts from Davie Dickson, Gavin Mackie, James Brown and Scott Murphy, tested the Rob Roy defence.
