'Well ace Bigirimana: Shout of 'Turn' led to McHugh error at Accies' second goal

Burundian sub Bigi had his back to the Irish skipper as McHugh’s attempted pass to him was intercepted by David Templeton who ran through and scored to clinch a 2-0 Accies victory.

Ex-Newcastle United ace Bigirimana said: “It was just a misunderstanding where Charles Dunne tried to play it through the middle and obviously, as the ball comes to Carl I think he’s got it under control as I’m about to move.

“I think he heard somebody say: ‘Turn’. As he turns I’m already away as he’s trying to play it to me.

“But when you come to places like this you don’t want to go 1-0 down in the first 10 minutes because it can change the whole dynamic.

“Everything’s a rush with decisions and you’re trying to chase the game because of the magnitude of it being a derby.

“So in games like this you want to make sure you keep a clean sheet as long as you can.”

Ironically, 57th minute replacement Bigi came closer than any Motherwell player to scoring against Accies with a late 35-yard cross shot which keeper Gary Woods touched round the post.

“It was a corner and they cleared it so I just picked the ball up and tried to put it in the mixer,” he said.

“But there were not a lot of opportunities where we made their keeper work hard.

“Our standard is to turn up for every game, work hard, create chances and finish those chances.

“Maybe we didn’t do all of those things as well as we normally do them.”

Bigirimana and his Motherwell mates will undoubtedly have to raise their game immeasurably if they are to take anything from this Sunday’s home encounter against leaders and reigning treble holders Celtic.

The seventh placed Steelmen will have to return to their fine Fir Park display produced against the Hoops in a league meeting in November, when only an 88th minute penalty earned Celtic a fortunate 1-1 draw.

“The manager and the staff here have had a lot of highs and a lot of lows this season,” Bigirimana added.

“Any time we’ve had lows we’ve taken the loss on the chin, turned up again and focused on the next game.

“We’ve always been bouncing back with a good performance and good result.

“That’s been the nature of our season so far.

“It’s not going to be anything different, it’s just going to be turn up and go for it and try to get a result.

“Everybody saw how well we did when we played Celtic at home.

“So we’ll take confidence from that and know that as long as we stay in the game at home we will create chances and hopefully we’ll put them away.”
