What Fabrizio Romano has said on potential Celtic and Rangers transfer dealings ahead of deadline day

The two Glasgow giants look to be approaching transfer deadline day from very different positions

Celtic and Rangers are both heading towards the final stages of the summer transfer window with plenty of work still to be completed - although the two Glasgow giants appear to be approaching deadline day from very different positions.

While Rangers have already completed a significant amount of business and are largely concentrated on completing the signing of Portland Timbers striker Kevin Kelsy, Celtic remain very active in the market as boss Martin O’Neill looks to apply the finishing touches to his squad ahead of an assault on the Europa League in addition to domestic matters.

And Fabrizio Romano has provided several significant updates on Celtic's late transfer activity, with one deal already completed and another major arrival now over the line. Here is your latest update on the current status of certain deals...

Celtic land Chelsea striker Shim Mheuka

One of the biggest developments came on Tuesday when Romano confirmed that Celtic had agreed a season-long loan deal for Chelsea striker Shim Mheuka.

The 18-year-old has already completed his medical in London, meaning the move is now in the final stages. Romano described the deal as agreed, with Mheuka set to spend the 2026/27 campaign at Celtic Park.

The England youth international is regarded as one of Chelsea's promising young forwards and his arrival gives Martin O'Neill another attacking option. Mheuka's move is particularly significant given Celtic's need for greater depth in attack, with the club having been working to add reinforcements across several positions.

Sørensen deal completed

Romano confirmed on Monday that Celtic had won the race for Parma midfielder Oliver Sørensen. Now, the Denmark Under-21 international has joined the Scottish champions on an initial loan deal which includes an option to buy. Romano confirmed the agreement after the midfielder travelled to complete the formalities of the move.

Sørensen's arrival gives O'Neill another option in midfield and represents one of the most significant pieces of late business at Celtic.

Celtic are not finished there, however.

More Celtic deals remain possible

The Hoops are continuing to explore further additions, with PSV Eindhoven midfielder Joel van den Berg another player on their radar. The teenager has travelled to Glasgow to complete a medical ahead of a reported £3.4m move.

There has also been movement around Celtic's search for defensive cover, with Niels Nkounkou emerging as a late target. The club are understood to have stepped up their efforts for the Eintracht Frankfurt full-back.

The Scottish champions have therefore entered the final days with several potential deals still on the table, while Reo Hatate's future remains another storyline to watch.

Rangers close in on Kelsy

Rangers' late window has been much more straightforward. Kevin Kelsy is on the verge of completing his £9m-plus move from Portland Timbers after arriving in Glasgow and undergoing his medical.

The Venezuelan striker is expected to become one of Rangers' biggest signings and could provide a major boost to Derek McInnes' attacking options following Youssef Chermiti's season-ending injury.

McInnes has previously indicated that Kelsy could be the club's final major addition, although Rangers remain open to further business if the right opportunity presents itself.

Raskin remains the big question mark

The biggest uncertainty at Ibrox surrounds Nicolas Raskin. The midfielder has attracted interest from clubs outside Scotland throughout the window, but Rangers have yet to receive a formal bid that matches their valuation.

McInnes has repeatedly stressed that Raskin remains a Rangers player and has praised his attitude despite the transfer speculation.

The manager must look at trimming his squad in other areas. There is also expected to be movement around several other fringe players, including Ross McCausland, Bojan Miovski, Clinton Nsiala and John Souttar.

Rangers' priority is therefore increasingly about finding solutions for players who could leave rather than bringing in a succession of new faces.

What happens next?

With the Scottish window remaining open beyond the English deadline, both clubs still have time to complete further business.

But if Romano's latest updates are anything to go by, Celtic's midfield activity and Rangers' attempts to find solutions for their surplus players could provide the biggest late twists before the window finally closes.
