Giffnock gold run

Giffnock North runner Sarah Eunson smashed a Scottish Under 17 indoor record that has stood for almost 35 years when she covered 800 metres at The Emirates Stadium in a blistering two minutes, 10.28 seconds – faster than previous holder Lynsey Macdonald and putting the 15-year-old Eunson seventh on the UK all-time list.

Giffnock North AAC hit the gold standard on road, track and country with remarkable performances from individuals and teams.

Over five miles on the road at the Renfrewshire Road Race Championships Debi Scott, Sheila Lewis and Allison Simpson won a hard-fought county crown ahead of top class rivals, edging Kilbarchan Harriers on countback.

With both teams posting 24-point totals on the pancake-flat course at Battery Park Greenock, Simpson’s ninth place was the telling difference, as final team counter well ahead of her Kilbarchan opposite number’s 17th. Over the country, U13 athlete Hamish Armitt continued an impressive winter’s work by winning his event at the British Athletics Cross Challenge against some of the best country runners in the UK.

Having placed third and first in two previous editions of the race, in Cardiff and Liverpool, Armitt looks well placed to win the overall series.
