170 tee off in Gents’ Open

A SUCCESSFUL Festival of Golf Week was completed on Saturday, June 17 when a field of 170 entered for the Gents’ Open.

A tight battle unfolded between Stephen Schembri and Gordon Etherington who both scored net 67 but, after a countback, Stephen claimed the trophy. With poor playing conditions throughout the day, the Scratch Trophy was won by Hugh Nelson with a gutsy 71 which was six shots clear of his nearest challenger.

The week kicked off with a team from Tulliallan winning the Open Scramble. The Seniors Strokeplay Scratch Trophy was won by William Erskine with a neat 71. The Handicap Section was decided on a countback and Donaid Speedie pipped Billy Mathieson for first place.

The organisation of the Festival of Golf week was in the hands of match and handicap conveners Alex Burns and Chris McMahon who did a sterling job. Well done lads for the great work.

The Civic Week Trophy on Wednesday, June 13 was won by Billy Stirling and this was also decided on a countback as both contenders had a net 62. Michael Wilson was in second place. Billy had the honour of receiving the prize from this year’s Civic Week Queen, Abbie Keenan, who was acompanied on the night by her ladies-in-waiting. Also present for the presentation was newly-elected Deputy Provost Jean Jones. A buffet was laid on which all present enjoyed.
