Athletics groups set to get on the run

The recent announcement by Scottish first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, has given hope to our athletics groups that a return to sport may just be around the corner.

The first minister’s update, which presented a cautious route of of current lockdown restrictions, it was announced that non-contact sports for 12-17 year olds could resume from March 15.

The lifting of restrictions on the number of people meeting outdoors will also be gradually introduced before gyms, swimming pools and other leisure activities resume on April 26.

The governing body for athletics in Scotland, scottishathletics, says it “welcomes the announcement” from the first minister and is now working with other bodies to create a framework to get the sport up and running when allowed to do so.

"We are now working closely with sportscotland and the Scottish Government to understand the full details of how the announcement impacts on the restart of sport,” said chief executive Colin Hutchison.

“We are also in regular touch with all athletics facility operators to discuss their plans for opening up again.

“Details of online Covid-19 update sessions will be sent directly to all clubs, covid-19 coordinators and coach members over the next week or so.
