Greg pushes his way to victory despite pain

Pushing past the pain barrier is the only way for success, according to one young Newton Mearns triathlete.

That was how Greg Turner (22) won the Mallorcan Under 23 Triathlon Championships in Puerto Pollensa recently.

Greg said: “The distance was longer than what I’m used to with a 2k sea swim, 61k cycle including two mountain climbs and finally an absolute killer of a 10k run again up a mountain.”

It was a tough slog for Greg and he was up against some stiff competition: out of 120 athletes, three were from the top five of Spanish Under 23s.

It was under the duress of the final run that Greg showed true grit.

He continued: “With 3k to go, my body was screaming with pain and the leader was out of sight... [but then] I could see him about 200 metres ahead.

“I managed to catch him about 400 metres from the line and even though he tried to go with me, I managed to win by about 15 seconds.

“We both collapsed as we crossed the line.”
