Hole-in-one worth a watch

A Barrhead golfer will have time on his hands after winning a limited-edition BOSS watch for making a hole-in-one.

Richard Elrick, 43, scored his ace on the 158-yard, par-three fourth hole at Fereneze, and the one-handicapper was rewarded with membership of the exclusive BOSS Watches H1Club and a specially-commissioned, commemorative timepiece.

“I was really pleased to get the hole-in-one. It was at a club competition and I was delighted with the club medal but the watch is a nice memento.

“I’ll probably give it to my son, Kyle.”

Richard is no stranger to the one-hit wonder club, having made three holes-in-one at competition level and at least six across his 25-year golfing career.

“It was a bit windy on the day but it was going from left to right. It’s also quite a narrow green. I used an 8-iron for the shot.”

Some say a hole-in-one is just luck but Richard believes there is a little more to it than that.

“You’re always looking to hit the flag or as close to it as you can get and you use your own judgement on how to get it there.

“It’s just all the sweeter when you can pull it off. They do say, though, the more you practise, the luckier you get.”

The standard celebration for such a feat is to stand the members a drink. So Richard bought a bottle of whisky and a bottle of vodka for fellow members to toast his achievement.

The luxury German brand has pledged to reward club golfers with an exclusive watch for every hole-in-one recorded during a club competition.

The scheme is open to any golfer whose club uses HowDidiDo – a free-to-use, web-based social network for golfers – and anybody playing in official club competitions is eligible. Currently, more than 1,800 clubs use the website.

Stephen Brydon, commercial director for MGS Distribution, the official licenced UK distributor for BOSS Watches, said: “Well done to Richard for accomplishing one of golf’s most elusive feats.

“For most amateur golfers, a hole-in-one is as memorable as winning The Masters would be to a professional. We want to ensure they have something tangible by which to remember the day, other than an expensive bar bill. The limited-edition BOSS timepiece is exclusively available to golfers who achieve a hole-in-one; it not only immortalises a once-in-a-lifetime feat, but also serves as a memento of their achievement.
