Holly smashes

A TALENTED Kilsyth athlete has smashed a 17 year record at a national competition held in Glasgow recently.

Holly McArthur competed in the finals of the Scottish Athletics Indoor League team event in Glasgow’s Emirates Arena.

The 15-year-old competed in the 800m, 300m and long jump events taking first place in each competition.

This helped her team from Whitemoss Amateur Athletics Club gain a first place overall in the under-15 category.

The team competed with four athletes including Holly across eight disciplines to achieve the top finish.

Kilsyth Academy pupil Holly even smashed the 800m record by completing the race in 2 minutes, 22 seconds.

The record had previously stood for 17 years in this event at 2 mins, 23.06 secs.

Holly, who lives in South Dumbreck Road, started athletics around three years ago.

She previously trained with Airdrie Harriers before moving to the East Kilbride based Whitemoss Amateur Athletics Club to focus on combined events.

Proud dad Steven was delighted with Holly’s latest coup, as was mum Allison, and sisters Lauren (15) and Elle (8).

He said: “She has worked very hard and it is not often we celebrate her achievements.

“I have to thank her coach Iain McEwan. He does amazing work with the team and really helps them prepare for competitions.”
