The highlight of this one-sided encounter was the five goals scored by Rabs striker Willie Sawyers.

Rabs showed their intent as early as the second minute when Hunter had his goal-bound shot blocked. It was no surprise when Rabs took a seventh-minute lead.

From a Duff lay-off Sawers sent a delightful 30-yard volley into the top corner of the Cunbernauld net. Minutes later the big striker should have doubled the lead when an accurate pass from Duff sent the big striker through on goal, but his effort was parried for a corner by keeper Quinn.

Rabs made it 2-0 in the 14th minute when Sawyers headed a Deas corner into the net then went on to complete his hat-trick eight minutes later when he connected with a Duff knock-down to lob the ball over the United keeper, and virtually kill off the game as a contest.

Deas sent a 25-yard free-kick narrowly over the bar before Zok failed to trouble Rabs’ McKinven with his free-kick from the edge of the Rabs penalty box.

Cumbernauld were more forceful after the break and were having their best spell in the match. Zok’s cross deep into the home penalty box was cleared then he hammered the ball over the bar when in front of goal before McCafferty had his shot cleared off the line. A minute later he sent a powerful volley inches too high.

In the 78th minute Rabs increased their lead when Hunter sent Sawyers through on goal. The striker took a few strides forward before lashing the ball past Quinn. Two minutes later Moffat added number five when he connected with a McLeod cross to give the United keeper no chance with a classic penalty box finish.

The visitors grabbed a late consolation with four minutes remaining when O’Halloran squeezed in a shot at the near post.

However, the hosts were not finished. In the final minute, Chris Duff – the ex-Campsie Minerva player, who had a superb match – released Sawyers in the penalty box, who ran in before blasting home for his side’s sixth – taking his personal tally to five.

Rob Roy: McKinven, Watt, Carter, Trialist, Jarvis (Martin 70), Moffat, Hunter, Deas (70), Duff, Sawyers, Team (McLeod 78). Unused Sub: Trialist.
