Lanark club captain hits first shot of 2013

LANARK Golf Club captain David Graham impressed his fellow members by rifling the club’s opening shot of 2013 over 250 yards up the fairway.

Mild weather conditions graced Lanark GC’s traditional January 1 tee-off, as the ceremony was staged for the first time this decade after being postponed by freezing conditions in recent years.

Lanark GC secretary George Cuthill said he was pleased that kind weather had graced this year’s tee-off. But he also expressed his regret that only 16 people had taken part in the subsequent two-ball foursome competition for the historic Orchard Shield.

“The days of 60 people playing in the Orchard Shield on New Year’s Day are long gone,” George said. “This event – which dates all the way back to 1884 – is being kept going by our older and more traditional members.”
