Fallon – who left Lanark as a 17-year-old to begin a 40-year stint as the professional at Huddersfield Golf Club in 1931 – was a former Ryder Cup player and captain who finished runner-up to Australian Peter Thomson in the 1955 Open Championship at St Andrews.

Another playing career highlight saw Fallon take a four shot lead into the final round of the 1939 Open at St Andrews before a nightmare final round 79 in strong winds saw him finish third, four strokes behind winner Dick Burton.

Fallon captained the 1963 Great Britain and Ireland Ryder Cup team which lost 23-9 to the USA in Atlanta.

His victorious opposite number, legendary American Arnold Palmer, was the last playing captain for either side in the competition.
