Late penalty earns Lenzie deserved victory

Lenzie commenced the game with some purpose and were stunned to lose an opportunistic converted try to the visitors following a number of unfortunate bounces of the ball and errors from the home side.

From the restart Lenzie regained their composure and control and scored two excellent team tries through the magnificent Letford.

Both scores were converted by captain Scouller and despite some pressure from Kilmarnock the score remained 14-7 in Lenzie’s favour at the break.

The second period began with Lenzie looking lively with Scouller, McDermott, Arnott and Nesbit offering a threat, but the score remained unchanged until Kilmarnock broke free to score out wide, narrowing the lead to 14-12.

Lenzie continued to play a short pass driving game with the classy Patterson taking control and were rewarded with a simple penalty score to extend their lead.

The home support were confident of further tries and a win at this stage.

But Kilmarnock were not finished and scored a late try out wide which was very well converted to take the lead at 19-17 for the first time in the match with less than 10 minutes to go.

Lenzie immediately put pressure on Kilmarnock’s defence from the restart and stayed in the visitors’ territory until they won a much welcomed penalty which allowed Scouller to slot home the winning kick.

Player of the match for Lenzie was Martin Williams.

This win takes Lenzie to sixth in the BT West Division 1 table aahead of their visit to league leaders Carrick next Saturday, kick-off 2pm.
