Twenty-year-old Gary, from Law, won Lightning Rod track championships at both Lochgelly and Cowdenbeath this season as well as the Scottish National Points championship.

Mechanic Gary, who works at Road Runner Autos in Carluke, held off the challenge of his gaffer Derek Nimmo and others to take the titles.

Gary said: “The class is quite competitive but Derek’s still talking to me so I must be doing something right!

“But to be fair to him he has supported me since I started racing.

“It’s been a really good year for me and it’s nice to win three trophies in one season.”

Gary only began racing when he was 16 racing in the Prostox class.

After stepping up to Lightning Rods, he has went from strength to strength thanks to his driving and his team, especially chief mechanic, and granddad, Alec.

Gary credits his grandfather as playing a big part in his success.

“He has been absolutely brilliant,” said Gary.

“Granddad was a mechanic but he has retired now so he spends a lot of his time working on the car.

“Something could go wrong on a Saturday during a race and by the time we get to the track for the next race the car looks brand new.”
