Lesmahagow boss calls for summer football

LESMAHAGOW Juniors manager Robert Irving wants summer football – after ’Gow’s home Scottish Cup tie against Johnstone Burgh was postponed for a FOURTH time.

The snow-covered Craighead Park pitch remained unplayable on Saturday to leave ’Gow players, management and supporters frustrated yet again.

Robert said: “After a miserable January and February again this year, why do we not go for summer football in this country?

“The powers that be talk about freak cold snaps and bad luck with the weather, but this is our climate now.

“Yet we still ask coaches to try and construct a league season and improve footballers against this sort of backdrop.

“Some junior teams are saying they haven’t played since November.

“Years of squandered investment and government ignorance and lethargy mean that we simply don’t have the indoor sporting facilities to cope with the winters we are now having.

“Why not change the Junior season from March to November and give us a chance to produce more good players?”

On a much happier note, Craighead Park was cleared of snow by the time the Gazette went to press as Robert and a team of hardy volunteers – backed by Scott Hamilton and his tractor – had worked on it for over three hours on Sunday.
