Lesson learned for Craigs

WHITECRAIGS coach Mark Senter is confident Saturday’s loss to Glasgow Hawks can be a turning point in their season.

The club’s most famous results in recent years was a 29-29 draw after extra time against the Glasgow giants which took Craigs into RBS West cup final on virtue of points scored.

However, this time round, Whitecraigs went in with an experimental line up against the Premier one side, choosing to focus on success in the league, rather than a cup run.

“The pack performed really well for us, it was a good lift to see some of our fringe players stand up and be counted against a team of Hawks’ calibre”, said Mark.

Now Whitecraigs, who currently occupy fifth position in Championship A, welcome Dalziel on Saturday.

The West Lodge side came out the blocks with all gun blazing this season, before being brought down to earth with losses to Cartha, Falkirk and Hamilton.

Mark continued: “We lost our way a bit. The losses taught us a lot about our team

“We have a mobile pack so there is no point in getting into an arm wrestle against the bigger teams.

“We need to spread the ball wide and tire out larger packs.”

After a week off, GHA will take their well rested bodies to Philiphaugh to face fourth-place Selkirk.

Head Coach Gordon MacPherson is looking to maintain GHA’s improved form.

“Selkirk being a top four side will pose an extremely tough test”. he said.

“They showed the quality of their players when we played them earlier on in the season.

“We are looking forward to it. We have improved but it will be a tough game away from home.”

Last time the two sides faced, Selkirk won 45-10 at Braidholm. However, GHA have steadily improved their league form since that encounter.

Gordon added: “Having beaten Peebles it does give you that lift, that confidence.

“The boys are happier at training it definitely adds to the confidence of the players.”

“The last time they got away from us. They have some quality players if you don’t shut them down they can cause you some damage.

“As a team.,we will be looking to improve on our structure in defenceto stop that happening.”
