Luke is on the run

This year’s Giffnock Running Festival is bigger, better and perhaps even easier than ever.

For the first time, the torturous climb in the 10k has been removed from the course, with the race, now mainly taking place within Rouken Glen park.

As well as the road race, there are also a series of events for youngsters, including a 1k run for P5-P7s, as well as a 5k for over 12s.

The event has been boosted by the addition of major sponsorship, in the form of support from Specsavers, AKP Scotland, Multivista and a number of other sponsors.

One of Giffnock’s most decorated runners, Luke Traynor — who has a 10K personal best of 31 minutes and seven seconds — is returning to Rouken Glen for another shot at one of the first races he ever took part in.

“This is the race which got me into running,” said the 20-year-old GB athlete.

“I loved it and was then asked to come along and join Giffnock North — I never looked back.”

Clare Stevenson, the U11 coach at the club, has been heavily involved in setting up the race.

She told ExtraSport: “In the run up to the Games it is important to have these events to capitalise on the enthusiasm. It’s a good fun race and it helps encourage an active lifestyle, as well as hopefully attracting new athletes to the club.”
