Agony as Tigers quartet stall at fours final hurdle

Glasgow Tigers lost out on making the Premier League Fours final after falling at the last hurdle on Saturday - having led the semi-final for its entirety.

The club’s top men were steady thereafter, keeping Glasgow’s lead over nearest challengers Workington to two or three points throughout.

Going into the 12th and final heat, Workington needed a win and a last place from Glasgow to put both sides on 23 points but the Cumbrians through on heat wins.

And that’s exactly what happened as skipper Summers couldn’t fend off Somerset reserve Jake Allen at the back, with Workington’s Kenneth Hansen heading home the race to send the Comets into Sunday’s final.

It’s the second major event in 2016 in which the Tigers have suffered last-minute heartbreak - having lost on the very last bend to Edinburgh in the Premier League Pairs semi-final when looking all set to make the final earlier this month.

And Tigers team manager Stewart Dickson insists his side’s near miss only makes them even more determined to give fans some long-awaited silverware, after coming close on several occasions in the last 12 months to winning their first competition since 2011.

He said: “There was huge disappointment in the camp after leading our group throughout.

“Aaron was absolutely gutted at the end and that’s twice now after the Pairs two weeks ago.

“I went round and spoke with our supporters yesterday who again travelled in great numbers to Peterborough to cheer the team on. I am a supporter so I know how they feel.”

Glasgow have a big week coming up as they travel to Berwick and Redcar on Wednesday and Thursday in the Premier League.

After that they take on Edinburgh at home next Sunday in the KO Cup quarter-final.

They’re set for a boost with the return of Nike Lunna at reserve after several weeks out with a broken hand.
