‘ness get a trouncing

The club’s record goalscorer made her 231st goal in her 259th outing for the Glasgow club as she signed off in style.

Other contributors to the scoresheet were Susan Fairlie — who grabbed four — alongside Lauren McMurchie, Courtney Whyte, Rhonda Jones, Abbi Grant, Leanne Ross, Kerry Montgomery and Erin Cuthbert.

City made a number of changes from the side that thrashed Hutchison Vale 11-0 last weekend but the alterations did not disrupt the home side who once again found their rhythm early in the match.

The Glasgow side had to wait just five minutes for the first goal of the game. From outside the box, McMurchie took aim and fired an excellent right-footed shot in off the post past Inverness goalkeeper, Kim Jappy.

The early signs appeared ominous for Inverness and it got worse moments later when they conceded a second goal. Lappin selflessly crossed for Fairlie and she had the simple task of slipping the ball home from close range to make it 2-0.

City had to wait until the half hour mark for the third goal. A Ross corner was nodded into the net by an unmarked Whyte as the scoreline began to more accurately reflect the home side’s domination.

It was 4-0 five minutes later. A good run and cross from Grant was squeezed into the net by Fairlie at the near post — her second of the match — and this kick-started a flurry of goals before the interval.

Jones headed home a fifth goal from a corner and Grant coolly curled a sixth before Fairlie completed a first-half hat-trick after a smart run and finish to make it 7-0.

The eighth goal of the game was scored from the penalty spot five minutes into the second period. As the scattergun of relentless scoring continued, Ross took her chance to get her name on the scoresheet from twelve yards.

A swift passing move on the break gave City a 9-0 lead. Fairlie was the provider this time as she found Montgomery who applied the finish. Seconds later, the home side reached double figures when Cuthbert made it 10-0 with a straightforward strike from close range.

The moment of the match arrived after 67 minutes. A pinpoint cross from Ross found Lappin in space at the far post and the number 10 made the net bulge for the final time in City colours to make it 11-0.

Fairlie grabbed her fourth of the match after being sent clear with sixteen minutes remaining and this completed the rout. The forward showed great composure as she rounded the goalkeeper to slip the ball into the unguarded net: 12-0.

Lappin was replaced with five minutes to go and she received a standing ovation from her colleagues, coaching staff and supporters. City were unable to add to their margin of victory but as the full time whistle echoed around the stadium.

Commenting on the match, City head coach Eddie Wolecki Black said: ”We asked the players to start at a good tempo but I never thought it would be as good a half time score as it was. We moved the ball really well with great pace and energy. We are delighted to get the victory and a clean sheet and it was a great way to send Sue off as she officially ends her career at the club, with a double figures win and she got on the scoresheet. We now look forward to Wednesday night at home against Spartans for the game in hand and hope we can close the gap between ourselves and the teams at the top of the table.”
