New BMX park opens

A new state-of-the-art BMX park is on track for success with youngsters in the northern corridor area of North Lanarkshire.

The new facility was unveiled last week at Lanrig Park,in Muirhead.

Construction work on the BMX track, which has been built on an old blaes football pitch, began in December last year and is now complete.

Strathkelvin Labour councillor John McLaren is delighted the new facility is up and running.

He told the Herald: “I’m pleased at how quickly this BMX park has been completed.

“It’s just in time for spring and I hope to hear bells ring! It’s a free facility for the community and I hope it will be the first of many.”

Around £35,000 of funding was sourced through the North Lanarkshire Council regeneration fund which allowed work on the BMX track to take place.

Councillor McLaren said he would like to thank North Lanarkshire Council Regeneration for all the hard work in getting the track up and running.

He added: “I hope the young people enjoy this facility.”

The site was previously a rundown sports area, but thanks to the transformation, pupils at nearby Chryston High will be able to use 30 new mountain bikes which the school bought recently thanks to funding from Education Scotland.

The bikes are used as part of the Bikeability scheme, which is a cycling proficiency course to teach youngsters how to ride bikes safely.
