Charlie, a regular contributor of classic images of the past to our pages, recently acquired a ‘new’ batch from friend Liz Buchanan, of Prettsmill Farm Cottage on the outskirts of Biggar.

Knowledgable as Charlie is about local history, he admits to being baffled by some of these photos and would like to recruit the help of our famously sharp-eyed readers in identifying their source and, up to a century after they were taken, even perhaps who is in them!

There are two in particular he’d like information on: one showing what is apparently two milkmaids carrying buckets, known as luggies, and the bizarre shot of policemen apparently having a shin-kicking contest outside a mortuary (pictured here)!

Said Charlie: “ I honestly don’t know anything about these pictures so it would be good to find out.”

Pick up a copy of the Carluke and Lanark Gazette to see some of the photos, and if you have any information, or know any of the people in get in touch with us by calling 01555 772226 or email [email protected].
