Down Memory Lane in Clydesdale

PARKLIFE 1928: Biggar has been blessed with some of Clydesdale’s bonniest public parks, both the Burn Braes and Biggar Park itself, the latter’s putting green pictured here near the end of the Twenties. It was that park which enjoyed a `spin-off’ to the then recent building of the Daer Reservoir, one of the huts accommodating the navvies there being `recycled’ to serve for many years as a refreshment bar there.

50 YEARS AGO

n The Carluke branch of the SNP, established four months previously, held its first social function.

n The splendid sum of £160 was raised for Lanark’s ‘Freedom from Hunger’ Fund. The money was raised thanks to a fashion show at the Regal Restaurant.

n A 12-year-old schoolboy, from Cartland died having been knocked down by a car. He was on his way to Lanark Primary School when the accident occurred.

n John Ritchie, the Senior Registrar at Law Hospital, was appointed as the consultant surgeon of Stonehouse and Law Hospitals by the Western Regional Hospital Board.

n Following the previous year’s successful Open Day, the Cameronians and Royal Highland Fusiliers were holding a Grand Gala Day at Winston Barracks in June.

n Carluke Boxing Club member Derrick Bishop was narrowly beaten in the featherweight division final of the Scottish Amateur Boxing Association Finals.

n Carluke Rovers were knocked out of the Scottish Junior Cup, losing 2-0 to Ardeer.

100 YEARS AGO

n A case of sheep worrying was reported to have taken place on a Carmichael farm. Four sheep were found dead and another four were badly torn.

n The St Leonard’s Choir Festival took place with a particular highlight being the performance of Miss Mary Bogle.

n A woman appeared at Lanark Sheriff Court and pleaded guilty to stealing three aprons and a blanket from a Carnwath butcher.

n A Forth man admitted conducting himself in a disorderly manner in the village main street. He was fined 10s.

n A Carluke couple got married in Christchurch, New Zealand. George Yule married Miss Mary Paterson who was given away by her brother who resided in Wellington.

n Considerable alarm was raised in Carstairs Train Station when a large piece of roofing collapsed. It was said to have been caused by the vibrations of a heavy mineral train.

n Law Volunteers faced Blantyre Vics in the Lanarkshire League. Law won the match 1-0.
