NEW LOOK SHOPPING: Work was about to start on the refurbishment of Phase 4 shopping centre at Cumbernauld, where a key feature was replacing the long disabled escalator with an elevator. New Look, Peacocks and Ethel Austin, Ladbroke and Poundland were being lined up to fill the area vacated by Tesco, now in Tryst Road.

This week in 1989

NEW HOSPITAL: A £4 million 90-bed hospital for the elderly in the Cumbernauld and Kilsyth area was being proposed, with building due to start in April and first patients admitted in 1991. The preferred site was Condorrat but the former Seafar Primary School was also suggested.

NEW POST: The Rev Ken Laird was poised to leave St Mungo’s Parish Church after 12 years to take up a national post with the Church of Scotland as an adult adviser in the Department of Education.

QUEUEING UP: Large queues of cars formed at most petrol stations in Cumbernauld following announcements that the price was to increase by 8p per gallon. Many proprietors were forced to close their forecourt as the demand threatened to leave them without petrol for the rest of the month. Four companies appealed to customers to cut their demand, adding that fuel supplies were being cut by 20 per cent and not ten per cent as had been indicated.
