This week in 2003

CUMBERNAULD was set to lose a key firm at Wardpark after staff at the Keihan plant were told they would be on the move. The company which made engine control units was based within the OKI factory but bosses announced the operation would move to Hamilton and that all staff could move there with them. They explained that the space was only rented and wanted a permanent base that they alone owned. MSP Cathie Craigie said: “I am disappointed that a firm is leaving Cumbernauld but I am relieved there are no job losses.’’

This week in 1988

TOWN centre traders learned that the mall’s manager Andrew Thomson had resigned. The surprise move came in the wake of a number of rows relating to the town centre. The most recent had been an outcry over a proposed clampdown on certain charities and organisations collecting money from shoppers - although there was no suggestion that this was why Mr Thomson was standing down.

A FURNITURE shop would pull out of the town centre just nine months after pledging to remain in Cumbernauld for the next 25 years. Gordon Furnishings in Phase 1 would cease trading after a lease expired. Managing director Alex Gordon said that shoppers were no longer looking to high street settings to buy furniture and that trading patterns had been too greatly on the slide for him to continue. He insisted that his original pledge was made at a point when trading had seemed much healthier.

This week in 1973

A GROUP of schoolchildren left wintry Cumbernauld behind after enjoying a week-long cruise in the sunny Mediterranean. A total of 24 pupils from Carbrain, St Josephs’ and Hillcrest primary schools were accompanied by two teachers. The pupils met some very special visitors to Glasgow when they arrived at at the airport after spying the England football squad – and were able to get their autographs!
